For the pause menu we wanted a clean, unobtrusive overlay. We also wanted to continue the art style of our game into the UI. This means no right angles, slanted vertical lines, and a cool techy color palette. With this criteria, a couple games came to mind.
The way that our characters receive their missions is through text messages, so making the phone pull up when you want to look at your missions made perfect sense. The menu slides in from the right as if you are pulling out a phone. We didn't want to be super in-your-face with the phone imagery, so we simplified and combined it with the shape language of our game.
